Department News

  • Prof. Gareth Roberts was granted tenure in March 2008.
  • Viraj Kumar joined the department as a tenure-track computer scientist in fall 2007. His Ph.D. at the University of Illinois Urbanna-Champaign is expected in October 2007 where he completed his M.S. in 2004. His interests include design and analysis of algorithms, automata theory, software verification.
  • Prof. Cristina Ballantine was granted tenure in February 2007.
  • In May 2006, Prof. Joe DeStefano resigned from the faculty of Holy Cross.
  • Professors Sharon Frechette, Andrew Hwang, and Stanzi Royden were all granted tenure in February 2006.
  • Prof. Laurie Smith King was granted tenure in January 2005.
  • The department was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Fr. John MacDonnell, S.J. At the time of his death, Fr. MacDonnell was a resident of the Campion Center in Weston. He had taught in the department for over thirty years and retired in 1999. He earned his Ph.D. at Catholic University of America in the area of Complex Analysis
  • Prof. Steven Levandosky joined the department as tenure-track Assistant Professor in fall 2004. He earned his Ph.D. at Brown University, and his A.B. at Holy Cross, graduating in the class of 1992. He taught previously at the University of Texas, Stanford University, and in a temporary position at the College. Prof. Levandosky's interests center on analysis and partial differential equations.
  • A Computer Science Major was approved in March 2004 by the faculty of the college and is available to students who satisfy the course requirements.
  • Prof. Catherine Roberts was granted tenure in February 2004.
  • Prof. John Little was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2003.
  • Two new tenure-track faculty members joined the department in fall 2002.

    • Cristina Ballantine earned her Ph.D. at University of Toronto and her Diplom (equivalent of bachelor's degree) at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. She taught previously at the University of Wyoming, Bowdoin College, and Dartmouth College. Her mathematical interests center on number theory, automorphic forms and representation theory, and applications to combinatorics.
    • Joe DeStefano will be joining the Computer Science section of the department. He earned his Ph.D. at Dartmouth College, and his B.S. at Northeastern Unversity. Prior to joining the faculty at Holy Cross, he was a Vice President at MadeToOrder.com. Earlier, he held a research position at Bolt, Beranek, and Newman. His interests include wavelets, signal processing, and genetic algorithms.

  • Prof. Edward Soares was granted tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in February 2002.
  • In December 2001, Prof. Deirdre Haskell resigned from the faculty of Holy Cross. She is currently a member of the Department of Mathematics of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario Canada.
  • Two tenure-track faculty members joined the department in fall 2001.

    • Catherine Roberts earned her Ph.D. at Northwestern University and her A.B. at Bowdoin College. She taught previously at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. Her mathematical interests span several different parts of applied mathematics, from the study of explosion, quenching, and absorption phenomena via integral equations, to the modeling of human interactions with environments.
    • Gareth Roberts earned his Ph.D. at Boston University, and his B.A. at Oberlin College. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Colorado before coming to Holy Cross. His mathematical work is in the areas of dynamical systems and celestial mechanics.

  • Prof. Peter Perkins retired from full-time teaching at the end of the spring 2001 semester. He will continue to teach part-time in the department.
  • Prof. John Anderson was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2001.
  • Prof. Maria Morrill left the department at the end of the spring 2000 semester to begin a new career as an actuary.
  • Prof. Mel Tews retired at the end of the fall 1999 semester.
